Travel Sketching in Scotland ~ Loch Eck, Aberfoyle & Jedburgh

Travel Sketching in Scotland ~ Loch Eck, Aberfoyle & Jedburgh

On the way back from Lochgoilhead (see the previous blog post here) I stopped at Jubilee Point again on the shore of Loch Eck. There were more people there, given it was late afternoon on a hot Sunday. I sat on the quieter side, meaning to do a finished painting but I'd left the proper brushes in the cottage! So I did a few sketches experimenting with colour.

It was so lovely and peaceful there, I could've stayed longer but food was calling me.

The next morning was drizzly so I decided to have a relaxed morning. Walked along to Dunoon in the afternoon and managed to do a couple of sketches in between the drizzle. Not sure if it was because it was a grey Monday afternoon, but the town looked a little tired. The buildings on the harbour are deserted and becoming derelict.

Drove to Tighnabruaich the next day for a walk on a very hot day! Managed to stop for lunch under the shade of some trees next to the loch. Sketched the view from my picnic spot and did a larger sketch further on of an abandoned lighthouse.

I had not planned on going back to Loch Eck but I passed it anyway on the journey to my final stop off. It was so peaceful and quiet. I put a rug down and painted a finished piece, with proper brushes, on a long piece of off cut watercolour paper that I'd taken. I did do a preliminary sketch before I did this painting.
I really love how it turned out and it was just so relaxing sitting by the still water, observing the view. This one is for sale ~ "Loch Eck Tranquility"

Stopped for lunch near Arrochar and sketched the view from my table, through the window. On to the very lovely Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel where I sat on the terrace with a drink until late.

Last stop on the way home was Jedburgh...31º so I sought refuge in the shade and sketched the bunting in front of the brightly coloured buildings which apparently was going to greet the King's visit the week after! The red building is the cafe where I had a drink and some ice cream later on. Notice the note on the bottom of the Mary Queen of Scots House sketch...it was very hot!

On that trip I drove over 600 miles, walked 26 miles and did 35 sketches and one finished painting.
