Walk & Sketch Class

Walk & Sketch Class

This month we're getting out of the "classroom" and taking a walk. To sketch en plein air along the river at Newburn.

Whenever I go out for a walk, I love to take my sketchbook and travel kit, sit for a while in nature and sketch. This is the perfect opportunity for you to make time to get out and practise sketching.

I'm hoping for warmer weather than we had for last year's class, and if it's pouring with rain then we'll have a cuppa in the cafe and sketch something from a photo...or the cafe itself!

Check to see if I have a class coming up soon here.

It is aimed at those who have the materials and is designed to encourage you to take the step towards sketching an actual view. I mainly just enjoy the process and the loose quality of the work, but sometimes I have time to use the sketches to make finished pieces of art. Like in this previous blog post ~ Heathery Lane from sketches to finished painting

Whatever your ability, it's just lovely to take time, absorb your surroundings and expand your skills. We had a great time last year in the first class and despite the wind, we did actually have some sunshine!

Below are some examples from my sketchbook. It's lovely to document special days out, or holidays, by sketching a couple of views. Maybe adding notes about the weather or the sounds that you can hear.
Most of my sketches take around 20 minutes to complete. First drawing the basic elements in waterproof fine line pen, then using watercolour pans and a brush pen to loosely paint the colour in. Sometimes if I've found a particularly sheltered, warm spot, I'll linger for longer and may put more detail into the pen work. But generally this style is a loose representation of a moment in time, and I love the results of not overthinking the process.
Maybe that's a lesson that we should all bring into our everyday lives as well!
